How to Change Brake Rotors in a Falcon

There are no new Ford Falcons rolling off the assembly line, so if youre a fan of this make, youve got to treat yours with the utmost care. An important part of maintenance involves checking the brake rotors periodically for pitting or cracking. When the rotors start looking worse for wear, its time for replacement. Fortunately, this is a relatively fast and easy process that requires only the most basic tools.

Instructions

    1

Park your Falcon on a level surface and put it in park, but do not apply the parking brake. Make sure the steering column is not locked.

    2

Slide wheel chocks behind each of the two front tires.

    3

Slide a floor jack under the rear end of the car, directly beneath a solid part of the frame. Pump the jack handle until the rear end of the car is up high enough for you to be able to put two jack stands underneath.

    4

Put a jack stand under each side of the rear end of the car, making sure theyre positioned beneath solid sections of the frame. When the stands are in place, gently release the pressure on the jack until the car comes to rest on the stands. Pull the jack out from under the car.

    5

Use a tire iron to remove all of the lug nuts from each of the two rear wheels, then pull the wheels off and set them aside.

    6

Locate the two large bolts on the back side of each rear brake caliper. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts, but do not pull the calipers off of the caliper mounts immediately.

    7

Get some twine, wire, twist ties or some other binding material. One at a time, lift each caliper off of the caliper mount and temporarily attach it to an exposed part of the undercarriage using your binding material. This is just to make sure that the caliper does not dangle by the brake line, which can cause brake line damage and subsequent failure.

    8

Pull both brake pads out of each of the two rear caliper mounts.

    9

Use a socket wrench to remove the two bolts holding each of the rear caliper mounts to the rear rotors. Set these bolts and the caliper mounts aside.

    10

Pull both of the old rotors off of the wheel spindles.

    11

Slide the new rotors onto the rear wheel spindles.

    12

Reattach the brake caliper mounts to the new rotors using the original bolts. Install them in the same approximate location where they were installed on the old rotors.

    13

Slide the brake pads back into the slots on both rear caliper mounts. If youre switching to new pads at this time, use the new ones instead.

    14

Untie each dangling caliper one at a time and place it over the caliper mount, then install and tighten the two bolts on the back side.

    15

Reinstall both rear wheels by sliding them onto the wheel spindles and tightening down all of the original lug nuts with a tire iron.

    16

Slide the floor jack back under a solid part of the rear frame and jack it up to about one inch above the jack stands. Reach under the car to pull out the jack stands, then carefully lower the Falcon all the way to the ground.

    17

Move the wheel chocks to the rear tires and repeat this entire process on the front end of the car.

ESP Kicks in

Last Monday,  ABS and ESP Warning Lights on simultaneously after emergency braking but I had no time to get it diagnosed at local Peugeot Service Center because I had to drive to Kelantan on the following day.

While I was in Kelantan, early in the morning on Wednesday the car was sent to an authorized service center in Kota Bharu @ Wakaf Siku (Jalan Sultan Yahya Petra). A faulty rear-right ABS Wheel Speed Sensor 4545.08 was detected and replaced. The car was ready around 10:30am in the same morning. Excellent service and reasonable price.

The ABS was tested by the technicians but I preferred to test the ESP by myself on my way back to Klang Valley.

Last night just after dusk I pushed off towards Gua Musang from Machang. It was still drizzling after heavy rainfall in the afternoon. The road surface was wet and perfect to push the car to the limit for the ESP to kick in...

After overtaking a car at 120 km/h the road ahead was clear and still wet.  I slowly built up speeds: 160... 170... 180.... and so on until the traction is lost and  the ESP kicks in to rescue.

Watch the VDO clip. (video with time, speed and location were recorded with Garmin 2575R Driving Recorder )

The ESP kicks in when the speedometer reads 190km/hr (186km/hr on the GPS) as I began be easy on the accelerator pedal just before negotiating a gentle right-hand curve - at which point the engine power was cut-off momentarily  and hence the speed was reduced until the intended course was corrected by briefly locking rear-left wheel.

What a fantastic job done by the ESP at 190km/hr on slippery road at night!!!

How to Replace a Side View Mirror in a 2002 Mustang

How to Replace a Side View Mirror in a 2002 Mustang

The 2002 Ford Mustang benefits from the major redesign made in 1999, giving the Mustang sleeker contours, channels in the car frame and bigger wheel arches. The side view mirrors are an essential part of the look and driving safety of the Mustang. In addition, the law requires both pairs. If one gets damaged, perhaps by a passing car bumping into the side mirror, it will have to be replaced. Fortunately, replacing either the driver or passenger side mirror is straightforward. With basic tools and a replacement mirror, youll have this job finished in under 15 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Open the front door with the mirror mount that needs to be replaced.

    2

Wedge the head of a flat head screwdriver between the mirror mount and the speaker grille. Gently pry open these two pieces by moving the screwdriver around the perimeter of the speaker grille.

    3

Remove the screw holding the speaker housing to the mirror mount with the Phillips head screwdriver, turning it counterclockwise. Gently remove the speaker housing from the mirror mount, taking care not to jerk it away as its still attached by a cable.

    4

Press the two tabs on either end of the wiring assembly that connects the speaker housing to the door near the mirror mount. Pull the wiring assembly away from the wire in the door when the two tabs are pressed in.

    5

Pry open the inner door panel trim that surrounds the power switches using the flat head screwdriver. Wedge the screwdriver between the inner door panel and the door panel trims, and move it around the perimeter. Carefully remove the inner door panel, when it comes loose, since wires still connect it to the door.

    6

Unplug the cable inside the door panel that powers the side view mirror. Look inside the door panel through the hole left by removing the trim for the power switches. Simply pull on this plug to loosen it from the socket.

    7

Use a socket wrench set to remove the three 16 mm bolts holding the side view mirror mount to the door. When the last bolt comes out, pull the mirror mount off the door, taking care that the cable inside the door does not get snagged as you pull it out.

    8

Compare the new mirror mount to the old one, checking that the size and shape are the same, as well as the number of holes for the attaching bolts.

    9

Feed the cable of the new mirror mount through the door in the same hole that the old mirror mount cable came through. Attach the new mirror mount to the door housing using the three bolts you took off earlier.

    10

Plug the power mirror cable into the door and the cable for the speaker into the socket on the door housing. Screw the speaker housing back into the door and snap the speaker grille over the speaker housing.

How to Repair Star Break in Windshield

A star break is a kind of break in a windshield that is usually made from a regular sized rock hitting the car. It looks like a small "x," or sometimes it can appear as just a little sliver. It doesnt really obscure your view, but over time, star breaks can grow into large cracks that will make the entire windshield to have to be replaced.

Instructions

    1

Gather your tools. Grab your drill with a carbide tip. You also need a torch to heat up the break to prep the glass. Get cellophane patches and a couple of anaerobic resins like Stone Chip of Chipfix, Inc. products that works with ultraviolet light. You also need a UV light. Get out a probe to use as a chisel on the break. Pull out a regular razor blade to scrape the glass and most importantly for windshield repair will be the bridge. The bridge, also called Injectors, is the piece of equipment that sticks to the glass. It uses a piston that injects the resin in and siphons air out

    2

Understand the process of repairing a windshield of make of. Windshields have two layers of laminated glass. When a rock or something hits the windshield, air gets in between the two layers, which will make the break contract until you have a long crack across the windshield. When the resin is injected inside the break, the bridge fills up the cracks while at the same time it pulls out any air that has been caught between the glass layers.

    3

Make any break into a bullseye break. A bullseye break is the only kind of break that isnt going to keep on cracking because instead of little stars or lines shooting out that air gets in and expands, bullseye breaks have a little circle that surrounds any sharp fingers. Tap the probe into the center of the star break until the glass forms the circle. You dont have to tap too hard.

    4

Drill into the center of the break. What you want to do is make sure there isnt any loose glass floating around in the broken area. As you drill the center of the break, a circle will pop around the break, making it become the classic bullseye, which is what you want.

    5

Inject the resin into the Bridge or Injector. Place the Injectors tip right in the center of the break. Screw the feet down to secure it to the glass. Pull the vacuum. Some bridges have hand pumps, or may be electric or spring loaded. The vacuum draws the air out of the glass. Do that a few times to get all the air out.

    6

Leave the Injector there and either let this cure in the sun or place an ultraviolet lamp next to it.

How to Replace a Caliper in a Saturn Ion

Replacing the brake calipers on a Saturn Ion is a bit more complex than some other models. There are extra steps you may have to take depending on the rear and front calipers. In addition, bleeding the brake system afterwards varies on whether or not you have anti-lock brakes.

Instructions

Prepare Your Ion

    1

Siphon off fluid from the brake master cylinder until it is half full. Use a suction-tube device like a turkey baster.

    2

Release the parking brake lever boot from the floor console by lightly pressing inward on the boot retainer sides and pulling the boot back.

    3

Loosen the tension from the parking brake cables. While the brake lever releases, loosen the adjusting nut to the end of the front cables threaded rod. Use hand tools to do this.

    4

Take off the tire after securely raising the car on a jack stand. Use the lug nuts on the studs to keep the rotor onto the hub.

Remove the Caliper

    5

Release the end of the parking brake cable from the lever on the caliper. Release the retaining tabs that secure the cable to the bracket on the caliper. This is only needed for removing a rear caliper.

    6

Compress the caliper piston with a C-clamp so the caliper can be removed. Position the clamp ends against the caliper body rear and the outboard pad to do this.

    7

Disconnect the fitting bolt attaching the brake hose to the caliper. Plug the holes with rubber to prevent losing more fluid or contaminating it.

    8

Remove the bolts from the caliper. It should now pivot upward away from the caliper bracket and slide off.

Install the Caliper

    9

Install the new caliper onto the bracket. Hold the guide pins in place while installing the pin bolts.

    10

Reconnect the parking brake components if replacing a rear caliper. Secure the retaining tabs by pressing the park brake cable end fitting into the calipers bracket, then secure the cable end to the lever on the caliper.

    11

Unplug the brake hose and connect it to the caliper. Use new copper gaskets with the bolt connecting the hose and caliper.

    12

Bleed the brake system to remove air from it. Attach a hose to the open bleeder valve and place the other end in a container half-filled with fluid. Have another person press down on the brake pedal.

    13

Connect the wheel back on and lower the vehicle. Set the brake pads with the pedal, pressing it two-thirds of the way down and slowly releasing it every 15 seconds until it feels firm.

    14

Adjust the parking brake cable tension if you replaced a rear caliper. Position the lever boot to the floor console and then press the boot retainer into place to secure it.

How to Replace a Caliper in a VW Jetta

Volkswagen cars are slightly different from other models. If youre looking to change the brake caliper in your Jetta, you need to see if the caliper uses guide pin bolts or not before beginning. You also need to take into account the importance of the hydraulic line (referred to as the brake line in other cars).

Instructions

    1

Lift the car securely on the jack and remove the wheel. If you dont have a jack stand, consult an auto expert to find one appropriate for a Jetta.

    2

Begin to remove the caliper from the hydraulic line from the caliper, but not completely. Remove the caliper from the carrier first by removing the bolts, then remove it from the hydraulic line.

    3

Thread the replacement caliper onto the hydraulic line and tighten it by hand. Fit the caliper onto the carrier, replace the bolts and finish tightening the hydraulic line.

    4

Bleed the system with the help of a bleeder bottle. Connect the bottle hose to the brake bleeder valve, open the valve and use the brake pedal to remove air.

    5

Replace the wheel and lower the car off the jack. Dont test the brakes on the road until you set the pads while stopped. Pump the pedal multiple times until it feels firm.
