How to Change Brake Rotors in a Falcon

There are no new Ford Falcons rolling off the assembly line, so if youre a fan of this make, youve got to treat yours with the utmost care. An important part of maintenance involves checking the brake rotors periodically for pitting or cracking. When the rotors start looking worse for wear, its time for replacement. Fortunately, this is a relatively fast and easy process that requires only the most basic tools.

Instructions

    1

Park your Falcon on a level surface and put it in park, but do not apply the parking brake. Make sure the steering column is not locked.

    2

Slide wheel chocks behind each of the two front tires.

    3

Slide a floor jack under the rear end of the car, directly beneath a solid part of the frame. Pump the jack handle until the rear end of the car is up high enough for you to be able to put two jack stands underneath.

    4

Put a jack stand under each side of the rear end of the car, making sure theyre positioned beneath solid sections of the frame. When the stands are in place, gently release the pressure on the jack until the car comes to rest on the stands. Pull the jack out from under the car.

    5

Use a tire iron to remove all of the lug nuts from each of the two rear wheels, then pull the wheels off and set them aside.

    6

Locate the two large bolts on the back side of each rear brake caliper. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts, but do not pull the calipers off of the caliper mounts immediately.

    7

Get some twine, wire, twist ties or some other binding material. One at a time, lift each caliper off of the caliper mount and temporarily attach it to an exposed part of the undercarriage using your binding material. This is just to make sure that the caliper does not dangle by the brake line, which can cause brake line damage and subsequent failure.

    8

Pull both brake pads out of each of the two rear caliper mounts.

    9

Use a socket wrench to remove the two bolts holding each of the rear caliper mounts to the rear rotors. Set these bolts and the caliper mounts aside.

    10

Pull both of the old rotors off of the wheel spindles.

    11

Slide the new rotors onto the rear wheel spindles.

    12

Reattach the brake caliper mounts to the new rotors using the original bolts. Install them in the same approximate location where they were installed on the old rotors.

    13

Slide the brake pads back into the slots on both rear caliper mounts. If youre switching to new pads at this time, use the new ones instead.

    14

Untie each dangling caliper one at a time and place it over the caliper mount, then install and tighten the two bolts on the back side.

    15

Reinstall both rear wheels by sliding them onto the wheel spindles and tightening down all of the original lug nuts with a tire iron.

    16

Slide the floor jack back under a solid part of the rear frame and jack it up to about one inch above the jack stands. Reach under the car to pull out the jack stands, then carefully lower the Falcon all the way to the ground.

    17

Move the wheel chocks to the rear tires and repeat this entire process on the front end of the car.

How to Peel Off a Parking Sticker

How to Peel Off a Parking Sticker

If your parking permit sticker didnt adhere that well to your cars windshield, it could fall off and get lost, leading to parking tickets and fines. Unfortunately, since they make the permits so adhesive, they are very difficult to remove, once they expire or are no longer necessary. Depending on the sticker, you may be able to peel it off just with your fingers, but it will often leave behind a difficult to remove residue or will rip as you take it off, leaving pieces of parking permit behind. A specific technique and a solvent are required.

Instructions

    1

Soak a section of a rag or paper towel with acetone-based nail polish remover.

    2

Work the nail polish remover around the corners and edges of the parking permit decal or sticker.

    3

Use the razor to start slowly removing the decal, starting from the corner.

    4

Apply the rag or paper towel soaked with nail polish remover to the newly exposed edges of the permit, if it stops coming off with the razor or if the permit rips and leaves parts behind.

    5

Scrape the permit with the razor, until all bits of the permit are gone.

    6

Soak a fresh section of the paper towel or rag with the nail polish remover.

    7

Scrub away any residue leftover with the rag or paper towel.

How do I Replace a Windshield on a 1978 Ford

How do I Replace a Windshield on a 1978 Ford?

Cracked windshields are not only illegal in most states, but are not safe on the road. Damaged windshields also let in moisture which, according to Auto Media, causes corrosive rust to form on steel surfaces and to compromise the adhesive bond of the windshield glass. To replace a windshield on a 1978 Ford vehicle, you will need a few tools, a powerful bonding agent and an assistant to help guide you. Contact your local Ford manufacturer to order replacement glass that fits your 78 model.

Instructions

    1

Wear safety glasses and utility gloves to protect yourself against hazardous glass.

    2

Dismount the rearview mirror. With a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws that secure it to the glass. Slide a small flathead screwdriver underneath the mirrors base and begin to pry upwards. If the adhesive is too strong, slide a thin razor blade underneath the base so that it will cut at the adhesive. Set the mirror aside once you have removed it.

    3

Use a trim removal tool to remove the cars top trim piece that lines the outside of the windshield. Insert the hook of the tool inside the gap between the base of the windshield and its weatherstripping. The hook must reach all the way inside the trim until it stops at the trim clip. Once the hook reaches inside the clip, pull upwards on the clip so that it will loosen the trim. Once the trim is loosened, you can remove it manually.

    4

Use a carpet knife to cut the windows inside molding from the outside of the Ford. Make the cut smooth, slicing around the perimeter at a steady pace.

    5

From inside the vehicle, push on the glass with both hands to dislodge the windshield from its frame. Have an assistant catch the glass from the outside of the car so that it will not fall and break.

    6

Use mild soap and a rag to clean away the sticky adhesive buildup from inside of the frame before replacing the windshield.

    7

Apply a bead of urethane caulk on the inside of the window frame. With your assistant, set the glass in the bottom of the frame first, and then lift the upper portion of the glass up and inside the frame. Press your body weight on the glass so that it creates an airtight seal.

    8

Allow the urethane caulk to set for 24 to 48 hours. Remount the rearview mirror with a mirror adhesive, which you can buy from an auto parts store. Follow the remounting process as directed on the product label.

How to Troubleshoot A Car Door Window

How to Troubleshoot A Car Door Window

There are generally two flavors of car door windows, the first being manual and the second being electric. No matter what the issue, door windows tend to have few parts and are relatively easy to fix or troubleshoot. Below are some common issues and their resolutions.

Instructions

    1

WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP INTO THE WINDOW SEAL

This is a common issue that is often caused by the window actuator arm being bent. The window actuator arm is nothing more than the tray that the window sits on and can easily be bent back or replaced.

Sometimes the weather stripping warps and that can cause window alignment problems too. I would definitely look into the weather stripping first then look at the actuator arm.

    2

WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP OR DOWN OR ROLLS UP BUT NOT DOWN

Wow that was kind of wordy. For manual or electric windows it could be due to a misalignment with the window actuator arm. For Manual windows check the clutch actuator arm, which is the crank you use to crank up the window. The teeth might be worn or the gears inside might be worn. check both.

For electric windows, the relay which is the switch box that sends electricity to the tiny motors that roll up or down your windows might be burnt out. Check the other windows to make sure that the problem is not wide spread and is only with the specific window. If all your windows have the same problem it might be a wiring issue.

    3

MOTOR RUNS BUT WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP

If you have an electric car door window this means that the window door mechanisms are damaged. Usually the sound of a humming motor means the switch can send the signal to the relay and then to the motor but the motor is trying to turn damaged gears. It equivalent to pedaling a bike with a damaged rear cassette, you can pedal all you want but the bike will go no where.

How to Replace a Broken Car Window

How to Replace a Broken Car Window

Broken car windows are unsightly, and depending on which window is broken, they can be dangerous, as well. A garbage bag taped over the hole can be a temporary fix, but you should replace the glass as soon as possible to ensure no one gets cut, nothing flies out of your car and no one tries to get into your vehicle when youre not around. Luckily, broken car windows are a fairly simple do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

    1

Buy a new window specific to your vehicle. You can easily purchase a new window at the dealership. Alternatively, you can find a great bargain by visiting your local auto salvage yard.

    2

Detach the inside panel on your car door. You will need to look and feel around the panel to find all the screws, and then use the screwdriver to undo them and pull the panel away from the door.

    3

Remove all door handles and armrests. These are also screwed into place, and you must remove them in order to get the panel all the way off the door.

    4

Peel back the plastic or waterproof sheath that was under the panel. If you do not see a plastic sheath, your car simply may not have one.

    5

Clean out the existing window track and all other window components such as the weatherstripping in the door. Wipe down your new window. If the existing track and weatherstripping are still good, you can use them for the new window. This includes motorized windows.

    6

Locate the small hole on the bottom of your new window, which will be at the rear of the window. There is a small clip located on the window track that slips into this hole and attaches the window to the door.

    7

Slide the new window glass into the door from the top, set it in the track and attach the clip to the hole. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, it may be difficult to slide the window down due to the shape of the brackets. The key is to maneuver the window patiently, removing any obstacles like additional clips or brackets that may be blocking the glass as you slide it.

    8

Ensure your glass is supported in the track by any other brackets or clips. It should now roll up smoothly without getting caught or moving around in the track too much.

    9

Replace the plastic sheath, door panel, handles and armrests. Ensure the window rolls smoothly, and tighten all the screws down.

How to Replace a Side View Mirror in a 2002 Mustang

How to Replace a Side View Mirror in a 2002 Mustang

The 2002 Ford Mustang benefits from the major redesign made in 1999, giving the Mustang sleeker contours, channels in the car frame and bigger wheel arches. The side view mirrors are an essential part of the look and driving safety of the Mustang. In addition, the law requires both pairs. If one gets damaged, perhaps by a passing car bumping into the side mirror, it will have to be replaced. Fortunately, replacing either the driver or passenger side mirror is straightforward. With basic tools and a replacement mirror, youll have this job finished in under 15 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Open the front door with the mirror mount that needs to be replaced.

    2

Wedge the head of a flat head screwdriver between the mirror mount and the speaker grille. Gently pry open these two pieces by moving the screwdriver around the perimeter of the speaker grille.

    3

Remove the screw holding the speaker housing to the mirror mount with the Phillips head screwdriver, turning it counterclockwise. Gently remove the speaker housing from the mirror mount, taking care not to jerk it away as its still attached by a cable.

    4

Press the two tabs on either end of the wiring assembly that connects the speaker housing to the door near the mirror mount. Pull the wiring assembly away from the wire in the door when the two tabs are pressed in.

    5

Pry open the inner door panel trim that surrounds the power switches using the flat head screwdriver. Wedge the screwdriver between the inner door panel and the door panel trims, and move it around the perimeter. Carefully remove the inner door panel, when it comes loose, since wires still connect it to the door.

    6

Unplug the cable inside the door panel that powers the side view mirror. Look inside the door panel through the hole left by removing the trim for the power switches. Simply pull on this plug to loosen it from the socket.

    7

Use a socket wrench set to remove the three 16 mm bolts holding the side view mirror mount to the door. When the last bolt comes out, pull the mirror mount off the door, taking care that the cable inside the door does not get snagged as you pull it out.

    8

Compare the new mirror mount to the old one, checking that the size and shape are the same, as well as the number of holes for the attaching bolts.

    9

Feed the cable of the new mirror mount through the door in the same hole that the old mirror mount cable came through. Attach the new mirror mount to the door housing using the three bolts you took off earlier.

    10

Plug the power mirror cable into the door and the cable for the speaker into the socket on the door housing. Screw the speaker housing back into the door and snap the speaker grille over the speaker housing.

How to Replace a Caliper in a Saturn Ion

Replacing the brake calipers on a Saturn Ion is a bit more complex than some other models. There are extra steps you may have to take depending on the rear and front calipers. In addition, bleeding the brake system afterwards varies on whether or not you have anti-lock brakes.

Instructions

Prepare Your Ion

    1

Siphon off fluid from the brake master cylinder until it is half full. Use a suction-tube device like a turkey baster.

    2

Release the parking brake lever boot from the floor console by lightly pressing inward on the boot retainer sides and pulling the boot back.

    3

Loosen the tension from the parking brake cables. While the brake lever releases, loosen the adjusting nut to the end of the front cables threaded rod. Use hand tools to do this.

    4

Take off the tire after securely raising the car on a jack stand. Use the lug nuts on the studs to keep the rotor onto the hub.

Remove the Caliper

    5

Release the end of the parking brake cable from the lever on the caliper. Release the retaining tabs that secure the cable to the bracket on the caliper. This is only needed for removing a rear caliper.

    6

Compress the caliper piston with a C-clamp so the caliper can be removed. Position the clamp ends against the caliper body rear and the outboard pad to do this.

    7

Disconnect the fitting bolt attaching the brake hose to the caliper. Plug the holes with rubber to prevent losing more fluid or contaminating it.

    8

Remove the bolts from the caliper. It should now pivot upward away from the caliper bracket and slide off.

Install the Caliper

    9

Install the new caliper onto the bracket. Hold the guide pins in place while installing the pin bolts.

    10

Reconnect the parking brake components if replacing a rear caliper. Secure the retaining tabs by pressing the park brake cable end fitting into the calipers bracket, then secure the cable end to the lever on the caliper.

    11

Unplug the brake hose and connect it to the caliper. Use new copper gaskets with the bolt connecting the hose and caliper.

    12

Bleed the brake system to remove air from it. Attach a hose to the open bleeder valve and place the other end in a container half-filled with fluid. Have another person press down on the brake pedal.

    13

Connect the wheel back on and lower the vehicle. Set the brake pads with the pedal, pressing it two-thirds of the way down and slowly releasing it every 15 seconds until it feels firm.

    14

Adjust the parking brake cable tension if you replaced a rear caliper. Position the lever boot to the floor console and then press the boot retainer into place to secure it.

How to Replace a Brake Line in a Jeep Grand Cherokee

If you drive your Jeep Grand Cherokee through tough, off-road conditions, consider reinforcing parts like the brake lines. Changing the line sections directly connected to the brake hoses with stainless steel pipes increase their durability.

Instructions

Preparation

    1

Look under the hood and locate the Grand Cherokees master cylinder reservoir on the drivers side. Top off the brake fluid and seal the cap tightly to reduce the amount of fluid lost during the replacement process.

    2

Lift the vehicle and support it on jack stands. Remove the wheel to reach the brake line and caliper.

    3

Take a look at the existing brake line and bend the replacement line accordingly to reduce strain while driving.

Replacement

    4

Remove the brake line at the brake hose first. Undo the two bolts on each connector using two line wrenches.

    5

Attach the new brake line, starting at the end farthest from the brake hose to avoid stretching the hose. Tighten the bolts with the wrenches after applying them by hand.

    6

Bleed the system of air. Open the caliper bleeder valve, attach a vinyl tube and place the end in a container with some brake fluid. Have an assistant press the brake pedal to remove the air.

    7

Put the wheel back on and repeat the process on the next wheel. Test the brakes once youve replaced all four lines.

The Oldsmobile Delta 88, or "88" for short, was a full-size vehicle manufactured at the end of the 1940s until 1999. You can remove the windshield from your 1996 Oldsmobile Delta 88 to save you the expense of paying an automotive glass shop to do it for you. It is not a difficult task to accomplish if you have someone to help you remove it. And it should take you only about 30 minutes. You will need a few tools and supplies, which you can purchase at a hardware or auto parts store.

Instructions

    1

Lift up the windshield wipers to the cleaning position. Loosen and remove the nuts that hold the wipers in place with an adjustable wrench. Pry up the windshield wipers with a flathead screwdriver.

Put on gloves and pry up the rubber seal around the windshield with a pry tool. Remove the seal from the windshield with your hands after you have loosened it.

    3

Poke the wire tool through the seal between the windshield and the frame. Run the wire around the entire perimeter of the windshield. This will break the urethane seal.

    4

Position your helper at the outside front of the Oldsmobile. Have your helper put on thick work gloves. Sit inside the Delta in the drivers or passengers seat and push the windshield out of the frame with your hands while your helper catches it from outside the car.
