How to Repair Subaru Brakes

How to Repair Subaru Brakes

Repairing Subaru brakes is a task that has many avenues of approach. There are several components to a braking system that may need to be repaired. The brake pads and braking rotors are the fundamental components of the braking system. The calipers and the brake lines are also key components that may be in need of repair or replacement. It is essential that the Subaru owner inspects all of the components of the braking system when making repairs or replacements to any other component, to ensure that any brake work will solve the problem completely.

Instructions

Replace the Brake Pads and Rotor

    1

Park the Subaru in a location that allows you to work on both sides of the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels with the tire iron. Place the lifting jack beneath a frame of the vehicle. Lift the Subaru and place jack stands under the frame. Leave ample clearance between the tires and the road surface.

    2

Remove the lug nuts and the wheels from the Subaru. Turn the steering wheel to the side of the vehicle opposite the brake you are repairing. Remove the caliper bolts on the side of the caliper closest to the vehicles frame, with a 13 millimeter wrench. Pull the caliper from the rotor.

    3

Slide the brake pads from the two sides of the caliper. Open the bleed valve on the caliper with the 10 millimeter wrench. Place the drip pan beneath the brake. Place the C-clamp over the caliper pistons and the side of the caliper. Screw the C-clamp so that the pistons are forced against the side of the caliper. The excess brake fluid will drip from the bleed valve into the drip pan below.

    4

Close the bleed valve with the 10 millimeter wrench. Slide the new brake pads onto the walls of the caliper.

    5

Pull the rotor from the wheel bolts. If the rotor is stuck to the wheel bolts, use a hammer and tap the rotor until it is free.

    6

Remove the new rotor from the packaging. Spray the entire rotor with brake cleaner. Wipe the rotor clean with a towel. Place the new rotor onto the wheel bolts.

    7

Replace the caliper onto the rotor. Screw in the caliper bolts of the 13 millimeter wrench.

Bleed the Brake Lines

    8

Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with the tire iron.

    9

Place the lifting jack beneath the frame at the rear of the Subaru. Lift the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.

    10

Open the hood of the Subaru. Remove the cap on the master cylinder (the master cylinder is located near the windshield on the drivers side of the vehicle). Position the spare tire on the top of the engine. Make sure the air filler nozzle is near the master cylinder. Connect the master cylinder cap from the bleed kit to the master cylinder container. Connect the tubing from the bleed kit cap to the air fill nozzle of the spare tire. This will provide the pressure needed to belled the brake line.

    11

Remove the lug nuts by hand and pull the wheels from the wheel bolts. Place the tube from the pressure bleeding kit onto the bleed valve of the right rear brake. Place the 10 millimeter wrench onto the bleed valve. Place the drip pan beneath the brake.

    12

Open the bleed valve with the wrench and watch the flow of brake fluid through the tube. When there are no air bubbles in the fluid stream, close the bleed valve with the wrench.

    13

Remove the bleed kit tube from the bleed valve and place it on the bleed valve of the left rear brake. Repeat the steps for bleeding before moving to the front right brake, and ending on the front left brake.

    14

Replace the wheels onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts. Lift the vehicle to remove the jack stands and then return the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.

    15

Remove the bleed kit master cylinder cap from the container. Fill the master cylinder with DOT-3 brake fluid and replace the master cylinder cap. Disconnect the bleed kit tube from the spare tire and stow the tire. Close the hood.

    16

Press the brake pedal slowly to restore the brake fluid to the calipers.

How to Change Brake Rotors in a Falcon

There are no new Ford Falcons rolling off the assembly line, so if youre a fan of this make, youve got to treat yours with the utmost care. An important part of maintenance involves checking the brake rotors periodically for pitting or cracking. When the rotors start looking worse for wear, its time for replacement. Fortunately, this is a relatively fast and easy process that requires only the most basic tools.

Instructions

    1

Park your Falcon on a level surface and put it in park, but do not apply the parking brake. Make sure the steering column is not locked.

    2

Slide wheel chocks behind each of the two front tires.

    3

Slide a floor jack under the rear end of the car, directly beneath a solid part of the frame. Pump the jack handle until the rear end of the car is up high enough for you to be able to put two jack stands underneath.

    4

Put a jack stand under each side of the rear end of the car, making sure theyre positioned beneath solid sections of the frame. When the stands are in place, gently release the pressure on the jack until the car comes to rest on the stands. Pull the jack out from under the car.

    5

Use a tire iron to remove all of the lug nuts from each of the two rear wheels, then pull the wheels off and set them aside.

    6

Locate the two large bolts on the back side of each rear brake caliper. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts, but do not pull the calipers off of the caliper mounts immediately.

    7

Get some twine, wire, twist ties or some other binding material. One at a time, lift each caliper off of the caliper mount and temporarily attach it to an exposed part of the undercarriage using your binding material. This is just to make sure that the caliper does not dangle by the brake line, which can cause brake line damage and subsequent failure.

    8

Pull both brake pads out of each of the two rear caliper mounts.

    9

Use a socket wrench to remove the two bolts holding each of the rear caliper mounts to the rear rotors. Set these bolts and the caliper mounts aside.

    10

Pull both of the old rotors off of the wheel spindles.

    11

Slide the new rotors onto the rear wheel spindles.

    12

Reattach the brake caliper mounts to the new rotors using the original bolts. Install them in the same approximate location where they were installed on the old rotors.

    13

Slide the brake pads back into the slots on both rear caliper mounts. If youre switching to new pads at this time, use the new ones instead.

    14

Untie each dangling caliper one at a time and place it over the caliper mount, then install and tighten the two bolts on the back side.

    15

Reinstall both rear wheels by sliding them onto the wheel spindles and tightening down all of the original lug nuts with a tire iron.

    16

Slide the floor jack back under a solid part of the rear frame and jack it up to about one inch above the jack stands. Reach under the car to pull out the jack stands, then carefully lower the Falcon all the way to the ground.

    17

Move the wheel chocks to the rear tires and repeat this entire process on the front end of the car.

How to Peel Off a Parking Sticker

How to Peel Off a Parking Sticker

If your parking permit sticker didnt adhere that well to your cars windshield, it could fall off and get lost, leading to parking tickets and fines. Unfortunately, since they make the permits so adhesive, they are very difficult to remove, once they expire or are no longer necessary. Depending on the sticker, you may be able to peel it off just with your fingers, but it will often leave behind a difficult to remove residue or will rip as you take it off, leaving pieces of parking permit behind. A specific technique and a solvent are required.

Instructions

    1

Soak a section of a rag or paper towel with acetone-based nail polish remover.

    2

Work the nail polish remover around the corners and edges of the parking permit decal or sticker.

    3

Use the razor to start slowly removing the decal, starting from the corner.

    4

Apply the rag or paper towel soaked with nail polish remover to the newly exposed edges of the permit, if it stops coming off with the razor or if the permit rips and leaves parts behind.

How to Troubleshoot A Car Door Window

How to Troubleshoot A Car Door Window

There are generally two flavors of car door windows, the first being manual and the second being electric. No matter what the issue, door windows tend to have few parts and are relatively easy to fix or troubleshoot. Below are some common issues and their resolutions.

Instructions

    1

WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP INTO THE WINDOW SEAL

This is a common issue that is often caused by the window actuator arm being bent. The window actuator arm is nothing more than the tray that the window sits on and can easily be bent back or replaced.

Sometimes the weather stripping warps and that can cause window alignment problems too. I would definitely look into the weather stripping first then look at the actuator arm.

    2

WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP OR DOWN OR ROLLS UP BUT NOT DOWN

Wow that was kind of wordy. For manual or electric windows it could be due to a misalignment with the window actuator arm. For Manual windows check the clutch actuator arm, which is the crank you use to crank up the window. The teeth might be worn or the gears inside might be worn. check both.

For electric windows, the relay which is the switch box that sends electricity to the tiny motors that roll up or down your windows might be burnt out. Check the other windows to make sure that the problem is not wide spread and is only with the specific window. If all your windows have the same problem it might be a wiring issue.

    3

MOTOR RUNS BUT WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP

If you have an electric car door window this means that the window door mechanisms are damaged. Usually the sound of a humming motor means the switch can send the signal to the relay and then to the motor but the motor is trying to turn damaged gears. It equivalent to pedaling a bike with a damaged rear cassette, you can pedal all you want but the bike will go no where.

How to Remove Water Stains Off Car Windows

Water stains on windows arent only unattractive. If they are thick or plentiful enough, water stains can be dangerous if they prevent the driver from seeing properly. At times, water spots are so mineralized that they are too difficult to remove with just soap and water or glass cleaner. Keeping your windows looking perfectly clear can be done in less than an hour.

Instructions

    1

Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and set aside.

    2

Fill the bucket with most of the remaining white vinegar. Make sure the bucket is absolutely clean before pouring the vinegar into it.

    3

Separate the sections of paper, so that you have them separated into individual sheets. Fold them in half, so that you have a two-ply paper thickness.

    4

Dip the newspaper sheets into the white vinegar until they are fully saturated. Dont leave the paper sitting in the vinegar, because it will get too soggy and will be unusable. Instead, just dip until saturated, then lift out of the bucket of vinegar.

    5

Press the wet, vinegary newspapers against the windows of your car carefully. White vinegar easily eats through the mineral deposit stains that hard water leaves. Because the vinegary newspaper sticks to the windows, this will allow the vinegar to remain in contact with the water stains for a longer period of time, versus just wiping with vinegar.

    6

Remove the newspapers from the windows when they begin to dry. Use a clean, dry towel to wipe the window clean, to see if the stains are gone, or if they wipe away easily. If they stains remain stubborn, repeat the process by re-wetting the newspapers, and allowing it to stick to the stains again.

    7

Finish by removing all of the newspapers. Spray down all of the windows with the vinegar in the spray bottle. Wipe down the windows, for a crystal-clear, streak-free shine.

How to Replace a Broken Car Window

How to Replace a Broken Car Window

Broken car windows are unsightly, and depending on which window is broken, they can be dangerous, as well. A garbage bag taped over the hole can be a temporary fix, but you should replace the glass as soon as possible to ensure no one gets cut, nothing flies out of your car and no one tries to get into your vehicle when youre not around. Luckily, broken car windows are a fairly simple do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

    1

Buy a new window specific to your vehicle. You can easily purchase a new window at the dealership. Alternatively, you can find a great bargain by visiting your local auto salvage yard.

    2

Detach the inside panel on your car door. You will need to look and feel around the panel to find all the screws, and then use the screwdriver to undo them and pull the panel away from the door.

    3

Remove all door handles and armrests. These are also screwed into place, and you must remove them in order to get the panel all the way off the door.

    4

Peel back the plastic or waterproof sheath that was under the panel. If you do not see a plastic sheath, your car simply may not have one.

    5

Clean out the existing window track and all other window components such as the weatherstripping in the door. Wipe down your new window. If the existing track and weatherstripping are still good, you can use them for the new window. This includes motorized windows.

    6

Locate the small hole on the bottom of your new window, which will be at the rear of the window. There is a small clip located on the window track that slips into this hole and attaches the window to the door.

    7

Slide the new window glass into the door from the top, set it in the track and attach the clip to the hole. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, it may be difficult to slide the window down due to the shape of the brackets. The key is to maneuver the window patiently, removing any obstacles like additional clips or brackets that may be blocking the glass as you slide it.

    8

Ensure your glass is supported in the track by any other brackets or clips. It should now roll up smoothly without getting caught or moving around in the track too much.

    9

Replace the plastic sheath, door panel, handles and armrests. Ensure the window rolls smoothly, and tighten all the screws down.

How to Replace a Side View Mirror in a 2002 Mustang

How to Replace a Side View Mirror in a 2002 Mustang

The 2002 Ford Mustang benefits from the major redesign made in 1999, giving the Mustang sleeker contours, channels in the car frame and bigger wheel arches. The side view mirrors are an essential part of the look and driving safety of the Mustang. In addition, the law requires both pairs. If one gets damaged, perhaps by a passing car bumping into the side mirror, it will have to be replaced. Fortunately, replacing either the driver or passenger side mirror is straightforward. With basic tools and a replacement mirror, youll have this job finished in under 15 minutes.

Instructions

    1

Open the front door with the mirror mount that needs to be replaced.

    2

Wedge the head of a flat head screwdriver between the mirror mount and the speaker grille. Gently pry open these two pieces by moving the screwdriver around the perimeter of the speaker grille.

    3

Remove the screw holding the speaker housing to the mirror mount with the Phillips head screwdriver, turning it counterclockwise. Gently remove the speaker housing from the mirror mount, taking care not to jerk it away as its still attached by a cable.

    4

Press the two tabs on either end of the wiring assembly that connects the speaker housing to the door near the mirror mount. Pull the wiring assembly away from the wire in the door when the two tabs are pressed in.

    5

Pry open the inner door panel trim that surrounds the power switches using the flat head screwdriver. Wedge the screwdriver between the inner door panel and the door panel trims, and move it around the perimeter. Carefully remove the inner door panel, when it comes loose, since wires still connect it to the door.

    6

Unplug the cable inside the door panel that powers the side view mirror. Look inside the door panel through the hole left by removing the trim for the power switches. Simply pull on this plug to loosen it from the socket.

    7

Use a socket wrench set to remove the three 16 mm bolts holding the side view mirror mount to the door. When the last bolt comes out, pull the mirror mount off the door, taking care that the cable inside the door does not get snagged as you pull it out.

    8

Compare the new mirror mount to the old one, checking that the size and shape are the same, as well as the number of holes for the attaching bolts.

    9

Feed the cable of the new mirror mount through the door in the same hole that the old mirror mount cable came through. Attach the new mirror mount to the door housing using the three bolts you took off earlier.

    10

Plug the power mirror cable into the door and the cable for the speaker into the socket on the door housing. Screw the speaker housing back into the door and snap the speaker grille over the speaker housing.

How to Repair Car Window Rubbers

The rubber on a car window can become cracked or chipped over time. Rubber on car windows usually dries out as a result of sun exposure and poor maintenance. Once the rubber dries out, it tends to shrink. This can cause irreversible damage to the rubber. Fortunately, depending on the extent of the damage, it can be repaired using a special sealant.

Instructions

    1

Wash the rubber with soap and water using a sponge.

    2

Dry the area with a lint-free towel.

    3

Apply a bead of urethane sealer to the window rubber and smooth it out over the rubber with an applicator pad. Make sure that the urethane seals any cracks or covers any chipped areas in the rubber.

    4

Allow the urethane to dry (called "curing") overnight before exposing it to any sunlight (or elements in general).

How to Repair Star Break in Windshield

A star break is a kind of break in a windshield that is usually made from a regular sized rock hitting the car. It looks like a small "x," or sometimes it can appear as just a little sliver. It doesnt really obscure your view, but over time, star breaks can grow into large cracks that will make the entire windshield to have to be replaced.

Instructions

    1

Gather your tools. Grab your drill with a carbide tip. You also need a torch to heat up the break to prep the glass. Get cellophane patches and a couple of anaerobic resins like Stone Chip of Chipfix, Inc. products that works with ultraviolet light. You also need a UV light. Get out a probe to use as a chisel on the break. Pull out a regular razor blade to scrape the glass and most importantly for windshield repair will be the bridge. The bridge, also called Injectors, is the piece of equipment that sticks to the glass. It uses a piston that injects the resin in and siphons air out

    2

Understand the process of repairing a windshield of make of. Windshields have two layers of laminated glass. When a rock or something hits the windshield, air gets in between the two layers, which will make the break contract until you have a long crack across the windshield. When the resin is injected inside the break, the bridge fills up the cracks while at the same time it pulls out any air that has been caught between the glass layers.

    3

Make any break into a bullseye break. A bullseye break is the only kind of break that isnt going to keep on cracking because instead of little stars or lines shooting out that air gets in and expands, bullseye breaks have a little circle that surrounds any sharp fingers. Tap the probe into the center of the star break until the glass forms the circle. You dont have to tap too hard.

    4

Drill into the center of the break. What you want to do is make sure there isnt any loose glass floating around in the broken area. As you drill the center of the break, a circle will pop around the break, making it become the classic bullseye, which is what you want.

    5

Inject the resin into the Bridge or Injector. Place the Injectors tip right in the center of the break. Screw the feet down to secure it to the glass. Pull the vacuum. Some bridges have hand pumps, or may be electric or spring loaded. The vacuum draws the air out of the glass. Do that a few times to get all the air out.

    6

Leave the Injector there and either let this cure in the sun or place an ultraviolet lamp next to it.

Prepare the windshields surface. Apply warm water to the scratched area. Tape off any painted or trim areas, as the compound may damage them.

    5

Polish the scratched area. The felt bob is meant to attach to a drill and should be used at around 400 RPMs. Use the tape guides as you work in a side-to-side motion across the scratches.

    6

Clean up the compound. Use a wet sponge to remove all of the compound, then follow up with a glass cleaner. Check the windshield for signs of scratches. You may repeat the polishing treatment again if the scratches are not gone.

How to Remove Replace a Passenger Window on a 2001 Ford Focus

How to Remove & Replace a Passenger Window on a 2001 Ford Focus

There are multiple reasons why the passenger-side window on the Ford Focus might need work. If the glass has been broken or cracked, it needs replacing for safety reasons. If the regulator containing the glass is not working properly, it can break the window and possibly damage other components in the door. You need to remove the doors inner trim panel in order to remove and replace the window glass and/or the regulator.

Instructions

Removing the Door Panel

    1

Disconnect the cars negative battery cable.

    2

Remove the cover trim on the doors grab handle and the small plastic screw cover in the door handle cavity using a screwdriver. Remove the screws inside the pull handle and the cavity, then slide the bezel off the door handle.

    3

Disconnect the electrical connector from the windows control switch.

    4

Unscrew all of the securing screws along the outer edge of the trim panel, then pull the panel away from the door and rotate it upward at the back to remove it.

Accessing the Window

    5

Take out the oddly shaped impact bolster by rotating it counterclockwise to release it from its retaining clips. Remove the retaining clips afterward.

    6

Disconnect the speaker from the door by removing the four mounting screws with a screwdriver and disconnecting its wiring.

    7

Unclip the door release handle from the doors front end and slide it out forward to remove it. Leave the cable connected to the handle.

    8

Cut the butyl strip on the plastic weather shield with a knife, and peel the plastic from the door. Dont touch the adhesive on the plastic.

Replacing the Window

    9

Reconnect the window controls to the electrical connector, and lower the window until you can see the windows support bracket bolts through the access holes in the door. Then disconnect the connector again.

    10

Loosen the bolts on the support bracket with a wrench without removing them, and then lift the glass out the door through the top opening while tilting it upward at the rear.

    11

Remove the mounting bolts for the window regulator and motor, disconnect the multi-plug from the regulator, unclip the regulators cables and remove the regulator through the bottom hole in the door.

    12

Slide the replacement regulator into the door through the bottom hole, bolt it in place and connect the multi-plug and cables.

    13

Insert the glass down into the door, making sure it is correctly located in the support brackets, and tighten the bolts.

    14

Reconnect the water shield, the door release, the speaker and the impact bolster.

    15

Reinstall the doors inner trim panel.
