How to Repair Subaru Brakes
Repairing Subaru brakes is a task that has many avenues of approach. There are several components to a braking system that may need to be repaired. The brake pads and braking rotors are the fundamental components of the braking system. The calipers and the brake lines are also key components that may be in need of repair or replacement. It is essential that the Subaru owner inspects all of the components of the braking system when making repairs or replacements to any other component, to ensure that any brake work will solve the problem completely.
Instructions
Replace the Brake Pads and Rotor
- 1
Park the Subaru in a location that allows you to work on both sides of the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheels with the tire iron. Place the lifting jack beneath a frame of the vehicle. Lift the Subaru and place jack stands under the frame. Leave ample clearance between the tires and the road surface.
2Remove the lug nuts and the wheels from the Subaru. Turn the steering wheel to the side of the vehicle opposite the brake you are repairing. Remove the caliper bolts on the side of the caliper closest to the vehicles frame, with a 13 millimeter wrench. Pull the caliper from the rotor.
3Slide the brake pads from the two sides of the caliper. Open the bleed valve on the caliper with the 10 millimeter wrench. Place the drip pan beneath the brake. Place the C-clamp over the caliper pistons and the side of the caliper. Screw the C-clamp so that the pistons are forced against the side of the caliper. The excess brake fluid will drip from the bleed valve into the drip pan below.
4Close the bleed valve with the 10 millimeter wrench. Slide the new brake pads onto the walls of the caliper.
5Pull the rotor from the wheel bolts. If the rotor is stuck to the wheel bolts, use a hammer and tap the rotor until it is free.
6Remove the new rotor from the packaging. Spray the entire rotor with brake cleaner. Wipe the rotor clean with a towel. Place the new rotor onto the wheel bolts.
7Replace the caliper onto the rotor. Screw in the caliper bolts of the 13 millimeter wrench.
Bleed the Brake Lines
- 8
Loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels with the tire iron.
9Place the lifting jack beneath the frame at the rear of the Subaru. Lift the vehicle and place jack stands under the frame. Lower the vehicle onto the jack stands.
10Open the hood of the Subaru. Remove the cap on the master cylinder (the master cylinder is located near the windshield on the drivers side of the vehicle). Position the spare tire on the top of the engine. Make sure the air filler nozzle is near the master cylinder. Connect the master cylinder cap from the bleed kit to the master cylinder container. Connect the tubing from the bleed kit cap to the air fill nozzle of the spare tire. This will provide the pressure needed to belled the brake line.
11Remove the lug nuts by hand and pull the wheels from the wheel bolts. Place the tube from the pressure bleeding kit onto the bleed valve of the right rear brake. Place the 10 millimeter wrench onto the bleed valve. Place the drip pan beneath the brake.
12Open the bleed valve with the wrench and watch the flow of brake fluid through the tube. When there are no air bubbles in the fluid stream, close the bleed valve with the wrench.
13Remove the bleed kit tube from the bleed valve and place it on the bleed valve of the left rear brake. Repeat the steps for bleeding before moving to the front right brake, and ending on the front left brake.
14Replace the wheels onto the wheel bolts and screw on the lug nuts. Lift the vehicle to remove the jack stands and then return the vehicle to the ground. Tighten the lug nuts with the tire iron.
15Remove the bleed kit master cylinder cap from the container. Fill the master cylinder with DOT-3 brake fluid and replace the master cylinder cap. Disconnect the bleed kit tube from the spare tire and stow the tire. Close the hood.
16Press the brake pedal slowly to restore the brake fluid to the calipers.
How to Change Brake Rotors in a Falcon
There are no new Ford Falcons rolling off the assembly line, so if youre a fan of this make, youve got to treat yours with the utmost care. An important part of maintenance involves checking the brake rotors periodically for pitting or cracking. When the rotors start looking worse for wear, its time for replacement. Fortunately, this is a relatively fast and easy process that requires only the most basic tools.
Instructions
- 1
Park your Falcon on a level surface and put it in park, but do not apply the parking brake. Make sure the steering column is not locked.
2Slide wheel chocks behind each of the two front tires.
3Slide a floor jack under the rear end of the car, directly beneath a solid part of the frame. Pump the jack handle until the rear end of the car is up high enough for you to be able to put two jack stands underneath.
4Put a jack stand under each side of the rear end of the car, making sure theyre positioned beneath solid sections of the frame. When the stands are in place, gently release the pressure on the jack until the car comes to rest on the stands. Pull the jack out from under the car.
5Use a tire iron to remove all of the lug nuts from each of the two rear wheels, then pull the wheels off and set them aside.
6Locate the two large bolts on the back side of each rear brake caliper. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts, but do not pull the calipers off of the caliper mounts immediately.
7Get some twine, wire, twist ties or some other binding material. One at a time, lift each caliper off of the caliper mount and temporarily attach it to an exposed part of the undercarriage using your binding material. This is just to make sure that the caliper does not dangle by the brake line, which can cause brake line damage and subsequent failure.
8Pull both brake pads out of each of the two rear caliper mounts.
9Use a socket wrench to remove the two bolts holding each of the rear caliper mounts to the rear rotors. Set these bolts and the caliper mounts aside.
10Pull both of the old rotors off of the wheel spindles.
11Slide the new rotors onto the rear wheel spindles.
12Reattach the brake caliper mounts to the new rotors using the original bolts. Install them in the same approximate location where they were installed on the old rotors.
13Slide the brake pads back into the slots on both rear caliper mounts. If youre switching to new pads at this time, use the new ones instead.
14Untie each dangling caliper one at a time and place it over the caliper mount, then install and tighten the two bolts on the back side.
15Reinstall both rear wheels by sliding them onto the wheel spindles and tightening down all of the original lug nuts with a tire iron.
16Slide the floor jack back under a solid part of the rear frame and jack it up to about one inch above the jack stands. Reach under the car to pull out the jack stands, then carefully lower the Falcon all the way to the ground.
17Move the wheel chocks to the rear tires and repeat this entire process on the front end of the car.

How to Peel Off a Parking Sticker
If your parking permit sticker didnt adhere that well to your cars windshield, it could fall off and get lost, leading to parking tickets and fines. Unfortunately, since they make the permits so adhesive, they are very difficult to remove, once they expire or are no longer necessary. Depending on the sticker, you may be able to peel it off just with your fingers, but it will often leave behind a difficult to remove residue or will rip as you take it off, leaving pieces of parking permit behind. A specific technique and a solvent are required.
Instructions
- 1
Soak a section of a rag or paper towel with acetone-based nail polish remover.
2Work the nail polish remover around the corners and edges of the parking permit decal or sticker.
3Use the razor to start slowly removing the decal, starting from the corner.
4Apply the rag or paper towel soaked with nail polish remover to the newly exposed edges of the permit, if it stops coming off with the razor or if the permit rips and leaves parts behind.
5Scrape the permit with the razor, until all bits of the permit are gone.
6Soak a fresh section of the paper towel or rag with the nail polish remover.
7Scrub away any residue leftover with the rag or paper towel.

How do I Replace a Windshield on a 1978 Ford
Cracked windshields are not only illegal in most states, but are not safe on the road. Damaged windshields also let in moisture which, according to Auto Media, causes corrosive rust to form on steel surfaces and to compromise the adhesive bond of the windshield glass. To replace a windshield on a 1978 Ford vehicle, you will need a few tools, a powerful bonding agent and an assistant to help guide you. Contact your local Ford manufacturer to order replacement glass that fits your 78 model.
Instructions
- 1
Wear safety glasses and utility gloves to protect yourself against hazardous glass.
2Dismount the rearview mirror. With a small Phillips screwdriver, remove the screws that secure it to the glass. Slide a small flathead screwdriver underneath the mirrors base and begin to pry upwards. If the adhesive is too strong, slide a thin razor blade underneath the base so that it will cut at the adhesive. Set the mirror aside once you have removed it.
3Use a trim removal tool to remove the cars top trim piece that lines the outside of the windshield. Insert the hook of the tool inside the gap between the base of the windshield and its weatherstripping. The hook must reach all the way inside the trim until it stops at the trim clip. Once the hook reaches inside the clip, pull upwards on the clip so that it will loosen the trim. Once the trim is loosened, you can remove it manually.
4Use a carpet knife to cut the windows inside molding from the outside of the Ford. Make the cut smooth, slicing around the perimeter at a steady pace.
5From inside the vehicle, push on the glass with both hands to dislodge the windshield from its frame. Have an assistant catch the glass from the outside of the car so that it will not fall and break.
6Use mild soap and a rag to clean away the sticky adhesive buildup from inside of the frame before replacing the windshield.
7Apply a bead of urethane caulk on the inside of the window frame. With your assistant, set the glass in the bottom of the frame first, and then lift the upper portion of the glass up and inside the frame. Press your body weight on the glass so that it creates an airtight seal.
8Allow the urethane caulk to set for 24 to 48 hours. Remount the rearview mirror with a mirror adhesive, which you can buy from an auto parts store. Follow the remounting process as directed on the product label.
FC on RON95 is not good as RON97 for Peugeot308 turbo
Surprisingly I found that the average fuel consumption for both trips which run on RON97 and RON95 were almost identical. The trip computer displays below was taken at the end of the trip run on RON95.
The average RON95 fuel consumption for the 586km trip was:
6.2lit./100km i.e 11.16sen per km [@RM1.80/liter] or, 16.1km/liter or 45.8mpg!
Now it is proven TRUE that in term of energy content there is no different between RON95 and RON97! [Click HERE to see fuel consumption for similar car running on RON97]
Next test is to compare high-rev performance [0~100km/hr acceleration and sustainable top speed] between RON95 and RON97.

How to Troubleshoot A Car Door Window
There are generally two flavors of car door windows, the first being manual and the second being electric. No matter what the issue, door windows tend to have few parts and are relatively easy to fix or troubleshoot. Below are some common issues and their resolutions.
Instructions
- 1
WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP INTO THE WINDOW SEAL
This is a common issue that is often caused by the window actuator arm being bent. The window actuator arm is nothing more than the tray that the window sits on and can easily be bent back or replaced.
Sometimes the weather stripping warps and that can cause window alignment problems too. I would definitely look into the weather stripping first then look at the actuator arm.
2WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP OR DOWN OR ROLLS UP BUT NOT DOWN
Wow that was kind of wordy. For manual or electric windows it could be due to a misalignment with the window actuator arm. For Manual windows check the clutch actuator arm, which is the crank you use to crank up the window. The teeth might be worn or the gears inside might be worn. check both.
For electric windows, the relay which is the switch box that sends electricity to the tiny motors that roll up or down your windows might be burnt out. Check the other windows to make sure that the problem is not wide spread and is only with the specific window. If all your windows have the same problem it might be a wiring issue.
3MOTOR RUNS BUT WINDOW DOES NOT ROLL UP
If you have an electric car door window this means that the window door mechanisms are damaged. Usually the sound of a humming motor means the switch can send the signal to the relay and then to the motor but the motor is trying to turn damaged gears. It equivalent to pedaling a bike with a damaged rear cassette, you can pedal all you want but the bike will go no where.
How to Replace Rear Disc Brakes in a Mazda6
The Mazda6 is one of several vehicles manufactured with disc brakes only. This is due to the efficient stopping power disc brakes have compared to drum brakes. The Mazda6 requires a special tool referred to as 49 FA18 602, which is available for purchase at the Mazda dealership.
Instructions
- 1
Loosen the lug nuts of the cars rear wheels using a torque wrench, but dont fully remove the wheels.
2Raise the vehicle off the ground using a car jack. Support the vehicle on all sides. Remove the lug nuts completely and take off the rear wheels.
3Remove the parking cable clip. Take out the upper caliper bolt and turn the caliper so that it faces down.
4Take off the V-springs and rear disc brake pads. Separate the shims from the brake pads.
5Push the rear caliper pistons into the bores of the Mazda6. This requires the use of tool 49 FA18 602.
6Install the V-springs. Connect the new shims to the new brake pads. Install in the vehicle.
7Torque the caliper bolt using a torque wrench. For the basic Mazda 6 models, torque it 27 to 36 foot pounds. For the Mazda Speed 6 models, torque it 16 to 23 foot pounds. Replace the wheels.
How to Remove Water Stains Off Car Windows
Water stains on windows arent only unattractive. If they are thick or plentiful enough, water stains can be dangerous if they prevent the driver from seeing properly. At times, water spots are so mineralized that they are too difficult to remove with just soap and water or glass cleaner. Keeping your windows looking perfectly clear can be done in less than an hour.
Instructions
- 1
Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar and set aside.
2Fill the bucket with most of the remaining white vinegar. Make sure the bucket is absolutely clean before pouring the vinegar into it.
3Separate the sections of paper, so that you have them separated into individual sheets. Fold them in half, so that you have a two-ply paper thickness.
4Dip the newspaper sheets into the white vinegar until they are fully saturated. Dont leave the paper sitting in the vinegar, because it will get too soggy and will be unusable. Instead, just dip until saturated, then lift out of the bucket of vinegar.
5Press the wet, vinegary newspapers against the windows of your car carefully. White vinegar easily eats through the mineral deposit stains that hard water leaves. Because the vinegary newspaper sticks to the windows, this will allow the vinegar to remain in contact with the water stains for a longer period of time, versus just wiping with vinegar.
6Remove the newspapers from the windows when they begin to dry. Use a clean, dry towel to wipe the window clean, to see if the stains are gone, or if they wipe away easily. If they stains remain stubborn, repeat the process by re-wetting the newspapers, and allowing it to stick to the stains again.
7Finish by removing all of the newspapers. Spray down all of the windows with the vinegar in the spray bottle. Wipe down the windows, for a crystal-clear, streak-free shine.
How to Replace a Broken Car Window
Broken car windows are unsightly, and depending on which window is broken, they can be dangerous, as well. A garbage bag taped over the hole can be a temporary fix, but you should replace the glass as soon as possible to ensure no one gets cut, nothing flies out of your car and no one tries to get into your vehicle when youre not around. Luckily, broken car windows are a fairly simple do-it-yourself project.
Instructions
- 1
Buy a new window specific to your vehicle. You can easily purchase a new window at the dealership. Alternatively, you can find a great bargain by visiting your local auto salvage yard.
2Detach the inside panel on your car door. You will need to look and feel around the panel to find all the screws, and then use the screwdriver to undo them and pull the panel away from the door.
3Remove all door handles and armrests. These are also screwed into place, and you must remove them in order to get the panel all the way off the door.
4Peel back the plastic or waterproof sheath that was under the panel. If you do not see a plastic sheath, your car simply may not have one.
5Clean out the existing window track and all other window components such as the weatherstripping in the door. Wipe down your new window. If the existing track and weatherstripping are still good, you can use them for the new window. This includes motorized windows.
6Locate the small hole on the bottom of your new window, which will be at the rear of the window. There is a small clip located on the window track that slips into this hole and attaches the window to the door.
7Slide the new window glass into the door from the top, set it in the track and attach the clip to the hole. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, it may be difficult to slide the window down due to the shape of the brackets. The key is to maneuver the window patiently, removing any obstacles like additional clips or brackets that may be blocking the glass as you slide it.
8Ensure your glass is supported in the track by any other brackets or clips. It should now roll up smoothly without getting caught or moving around in the track too much.
9Replace the plastic sheath, door panel, handles and armrests. Ensure the window rolls smoothly, and tighten all the screws down.
What Is Auto Glazing
Auto glazing is a type of automotive window that is produced by injection molding a strong polycarbonate plastic. Also known as PC glazing, it can be used to create shapes that are impossible for glass to achieve.
Function
Although vehicle headlamp covers have been made out of polycarbonate for more than a decade, it is because of recent advances in materials and machinery that the automotive industry is able to create auto glazing windows. Auto glazing can be used to fabricate windows almost as large as glass windows, with a weight savings of almost 50 percent.
Benefits
Aside from the aforementioned weight savings, auto glazing can be used to create exciting new design concepts such as nonwindow transparent body panels and side windows with the rearview mirror built in rather than mounted on the side door. It is also easy and inexpensive to create things such as 3D window shapes and holes in the windows.
Potential
In addition to the design innovations, automotive industry inventors are working on light-allowing and -blocking polycarbonate compounds, as well as antiscratch coatings. Also, auto glazing is light enough to potentially build a car with a large, panoramic roof.
How to Replace a Side View Mirror in a 2002 Mustang
The 2002 Ford Mustang benefits from the major redesign made in 1999, giving the Mustang sleeker contours, channels in the car frame and bigger wheel arches. The side view mirrors are an essential part of the look and driving safety of the Mustang. In addition, the law requires both pairs. If one gets damaged, perhaps by a passing car bumping into the side mirror, it will have to be replaced. Fortunately, replacing either the driver or passenger side mirror is straightforward. With basic tools and a replacement mirror, youll have this job finished in under 15 minutes.
Instructions
- 1
Open the front door with the mirror mount that needs to be replaced.
2Wedge the head of a flat head screwdriver between the mirror mount and the speaker grille. Gently pry open these two pieces by moving the screwdriver around the perimeter of the speaker grille.
3Remove the screw holding the speaker housing to the mirror mount with the Phillips head screwdriver, turning it counterclockwise. Gently remove the speaker housing from the mirror mount, taking care not to jerk it away as its still attached by a cable.
4Press the two tabs on either end of the wiring assembly that connects the speaker housing to the door near the mirror mount. Pull the wiring assembly away from the wire in the door when the two tabs are pressed in.
5Pry open the inner door panel trim that surrounds the power switches using the flat head screwdriver. Wedge the screwdriver between the inner door panel and the door panel trims, and move it around the perimeter. Carefully remove the inner door panel, when it comes loose, since wires still connect it to the door.
6Unplug the cable inside the door panel that powers the side view mirror. Look inside the door panel through the hole left by removing the trim for the power switches. Simply pull on this plug to loosen it from the socket.
7Use a socket wrench set to remove the three 16 mm bolts holding the side view mirror mount to the door. When the last bolt comes out, pull the mirror mount off the door, taking care that the cable inside the door does not get snagged as you pull it out.
8Compare the new mirror mount to the old one, checking that the size and shape are the same, as well as the number of holes for the attaching bolts.
9Feed the cable of the new mirror mount through the door in the same hole that the old mirror mount cable came through. Attach the new mirror mount to the door housing using the three bolts you took off earlier.
10Plug the power mirror cable into the door and the cable for the speaker into the socket on the door housing. Screw the speaker housing back into the door and snap the speaker grille over the speaker housing.

Auto Glass Specs
Its easy to forget how important an automobiles glass is to the vehicle. After all, if its doing its job, youre looking right through it. But auto glass is manufactured for structure, safety and aerodynamic purposes. Automobile glass has changed throughout the years, and the current materials used reflect the current peak of automotive engineering.
Glass evolution
The first windshields were plates of glass, not unlike the type of glass found in home windows. By the late 1920s, however, Ford vehicles were using a less dangerous type of glass called laminated glass. Tempered glass debuted in 1938 and is still often used for rear window and side window (door) applications. Current auto glass manufacturers make several types of glass for modern vehicles, including hydrophobic glass and heat-strengthened laminated glass.
Fabrication
Auto glass is composed of four primary components: sand, dolomite, soda ash and limestone. About 70 percent of auto glass is sand. Windshields are made using a laminate process that adheres two sheets of glass to a layer of vinyl. Side and rear windows are made from tempered glass, which is glass that is heated to more than 1,000 degrees and then rapidly cooled.
Safety standards
All modern automobile glass must meet the specifications outlined by the American Glass Replacement Safety Standards Council and the American National Standards Institute. Tests include the front-impact test, which states that the windshield should not dislodge from the vehicle during a 30-mile-per-hour crash; and the roof crush test, which tests the durability of the windshield when 5,000 lbs. or 1 1/2 times the weight of the vehicle, whichever is less, is applied to the vehicles roof.
Tinting
Many states regulate the use of window film and tinting products. For windshields, most states prohibit darkening the windows below a factory specified mark on the front window called AS1. Some states are more specific, as Alabama allows for 6 inches of tinting, Hawaii allows for 4 inches and West Virginia permits 5 inches. Regulations also vary by state on the amount of visible light that must be allowed to pass through side and rear windows. Some states, such as Pennsylvania, mandate that 70 percent of available light pass through the tinting product. Other states, such as Kentucky, are more permissive, allowing 15 percent of available light. Check regulations with your state to verify what is allowed in your state.
